It turns out many people are looking for contact lens for dry eyes. I know I have the problem of dry eyes. It doesn’t show when I wear glasses but it really show if I wear contacts. I can’t wear them for any length of time before I have to get the darn things out. My eyes have always been dry. I really notice it if I face a strong breeze. Might eyes can become very irritated just from blinking.

This would be an extreme case but did you know your contacts can cause your dry eyes. This would happen if you didn’t already have enough tear on your eyes in the first place and some contacts can draw your tears into them as they dry out themselves.

The reason is contact lenses are made from one of two types of polymeric materials. Soft contact lenses are made from hydrophilic plastics that contain water and might have anywhere from 30-75% water depending on what type of wearing schedule they are designed for. In general, more the water content a soft contact lens has, the more prone it is to drying out and losing its own water leaving it to soak up your tears like a sponge.

I was amazed to learn that up to 50% of soft contact lens wearers complain of dryness. Contacts can disrupt the delicate balance of tear film production and can bring about dry eye symptoms. Some contact lens users can only wear lenses comfortably for short periods of time and others aren’t effected at all. Dryness is the main reason why people permanently stop wearing contact lenses.

There are some ways contact lens wearers can get comfort for their dry eyes while wearing their contact lenses for a longer periods of time. Possible remedies of contact lens related dryness include:

Re-soak lenses during the day. Done for just a few minutes, many have found they can wear their contacts comfortably for many more hours.

More complete and frequent blinking. Blinking completely and often is necessary to rewet the lenses and maintain comfort. Sometimes forgotten when a person is concentrating, they don’t blink as often as they should. This is why computer users often complain of lens dryness.

Switching to a different lens material. There are lens brands designed specifically to provide more comfort for those who have problems with dryness. For help on brands talk to your eye doctor it can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Prescription eye drops. Your eye doctor may suggest an anti-inflammatory eye drop prescribed for moderate to severe dry eyes. Remember to remove your contacts before using any type of drops.
